10 Crucial Japanese Survival Phrases

Today I want to share with you 10 phrases that are crucial to anyone traveling to Japan. Let’s get started, shall we?

  1. Phrase: Eigo ga wakarimasuka? Meaning: Do you speak English?
  2. Phrase: Nihongo ga wakarimasen. Meaning: I do not speak/understand Japanese.
  3. Phrase: Keko desu. Meaning: I’ve had enough or No, thank you.
  4. Phrase: Arigato gozaimasu. Meaning: Thank you very much.
  5. Phrase: Do itashimashite. Meaning: You are welcome.
  6. Phrase: Sumimasen. Meaning: Excuse me.
  7. Phrase: Gomen nasai. Meaning: I am sorry.
  8. Phrase: Shitsurei shimasu. Meaning: Excuse me, literally, I am rude.
  9. Words: Kore, sore, are. Meaning: This, that, that over there.
  10. Words: Wakarimasu, wakarimasen. Meaning: I know or I understand, I don’t know or I don’t understand.

    in number nine, is it supposed to say ‘kore, sore, are’ not ‘…ale’? is ‘ale’ an alternative way of saying ‘are’?
