Japanese Gift-Giving + Enter to win an Omiyage from Japan!
May 10th, 2009
In this episode, we talk about gift-giving in Japan. Omiyage is an important part of Japanese culture but it can be a little tricky sometimes. We go over the proper way to give and receive omiyage, as well as when you’re expected to buy omiyage for others.
Speaking of omiyage…I (Kevin) just got back from a short trip to Japan and brought back an omiyage for our Happy Hour Japan viewers! Unfortunately, I only have one so we’ll holding a drawing in our next episode for it. If you’re interested, comment below and be sure to let me know you want to be entered in the raffle!
Cheers!….er, I mean, Kanpai!

Another great video! I like that you only put in a few phrases to learn each time, it really helps to let them stick and not get lost
And totally put my name in for the omiyage drawing! That towel has done more traveling than me already, ha.
Hey guys! Thanks for the show, always a blast! Also, I wouldn’t mind my name being in the drawing..
Please put my name in for the raffle

Yeah!! I love the Yamanote train! Count me in…oh, and thanks for the help with Nihongo!
I agree the Yamanote train is pretty cool–especially now that they upgraded and have those small tvs over each door. Plus they have those 1-minute English lessons which are pretty entertaining. Anyway, you’re on the list Maiku. Thanks for the comment!
Hey, I could use a new towel, since I just through my old one away today. Sadly, until the raffle drawing, I won’t be able to shower. Crossing my fingers!
Oh! I would love one!!!
Mahalo
I hope you win the towel for your sake, James! lol
Mahalo for the comment Melody, I’ll enter your name into the drawing!

I want that Omiage!!
Hi Andrés! I’ve got your name on the list so stay tuned to see if you win!
Hi,i’m new, was surfing net & found your video on youtube,so visited your site - watched all videoes without a pause - awesome. though not agree with u that one can learn language without useing books but only due to conversation - however its ones own business. Well anyway like u and what u r doing so keep going !!!!!! And certainly would like to have Omiage - cause to get smth in Ukraine from Japan is really difficult and the nearest trip to Japan will happen i guess not earlier than in 4-5 years cause this is rather expensive entertainment - so im saving some money ^_^ anyway thanks 4 everuthing & i look foward 4 new materials
Hi, I accidentally found your video blog! Great stuff. I did not know about the abbreviation KY. I must have been away from Japan too long!!
I want that Omiyage.
Love the videos
@scloca
Thanks for the great comment! I’ll be sure to add your name to the omiyage drawing!
Regarding textbooks, I agree that everyone learns in a different way and that some people probably find them more useful than others. Don’t get me wrong, I think textbooks are filled with great information. That being said, I think they are limited in their ability to help people learn to freely *communicate* in Japanese in the real world and stay motivated along the way. What do you think?
@mariko
Hi mariko! Glad to hear that you’re enjoying our blog! Isn’t it crazy how quickly language evolves in Japan?! Every time I visit Japan I feel like there’s a new set of trendy vocabulary I need to learn. It’s pretty incredible, but definitely fun too!
@Brian
Will do Brian! And thanks for the great comment!
too bad i missed “the raffle”! xD
btw how to say “You shouldn’t have done that” in Japanese, and when it’s used. You said it pretty fast
