2-minute topic: Riding the train in Japan

January 9th, 2010

あけましておめでとうございます!

I know I’m a little late, but Happy New Year! Thanks for a great 2009 and all the best in 2010!

Just the other day, I was in Tokyo and decided to make this short video about how to ride the train in Japan…afterall it is the most popular form of public transportation.

Unfortunately, I didn’t have enough footage for a full-blown episode, but you can think of this as the first of many “2-minute topic” videos!

Kanpai,
Kevin

Sounds alot more complicated to the train rides back in the US, I’m still having troubles understanding it… But once I do it I’ll understand it more and more! Arigatou gozaimashite!!!

Great “Riding the train in Japan #1 video”, Kevin! Look forward to Part 2!
Good advice about purchasing a ticket at the lowest fair and then “paying up” the full cost at the destination.
You bought a single ticket at the vending machine very fast, without taking time to show a close up of the vending machine or how it works, etc. Maybe in a future episode?
It can be very intimidating for a non-native traveler to be standing around gawking at signs in Japanese trying to figure out what to do, with crowds of Japanese rushing around you.
You mentioned in an earlier video about the convenience of Japan Rail Pass, which you can only purchase outside Japan (http://www.japanrail.com/index.php?page=JR-japan-rail-pass). This would be best option for travelers coming to Japan and planing to use the rail system.
Nice thing is the Japanese train system is punctual, clean and affordable. Also, the train platforms have signs in English (Romaji) and Japanese, with train announcements in both English and Japanese at major stations (JR West).
    Happy Trails!

It’s nice to know about the ability to upgrade the ticket. I didn’t know that while I was there, and had a little difficulty reading the maps, but managed.
I’ll be better prepared for the next trip. :)
