Submit your T-shirt designs!

August 6th, 2009

Aaron and I were pleasantly surprised at the positive response we got to our T-shirt suggestion. Thanks to all of you who gave us feedback!

But before we can start printing t-shirts we need a design so we’ve decided to officially kick-off our t-shirt design contest!

The winning design will be featured on our first HHJ T-shirt and possibly some other items as well…like hats, pins, and maybe even water bottles!

To enter your design, simply email it to either Aaron or me (aaron[at]ispeakjapanese.net or kevin[at]ispeakjapanese.net). When we’ve collected enough entries, we’ll post all the designs on our site and have everyone vote on their favorite. There aren’t any real rules or restrictions, but try to keep it clean ;) Sketches are welcome, although print-quality images would be appreciated.

I’ve already received a couple of designs, but hopefully we can pull together many more so that we have healthy pool to choose from.

We look forward to seeing your designs!

Kanpai,

Kevin

You guys are so great teachers. I am so glad I have founf you. I have been relocated to Toookyo from London, for a six months job assignment.
I arrived two months ago and only today I get the “ball rolling” over learning Japanese.
Thank you so much for inspiring me.

Hi, could you teach me to add your site to my rss reader?

    Howdy again, Kevin and Aaron!
    Great idea, T-shirt design contest!

This brings up an interesting point of “travel interest” when visiting Japan, and
that is the comically misspelled and grammatically incorrect use of English on
Japanese outer wear, like T-shirts, sweatshirts and the like. Not to mention the
odd signs in public places written in some amusing and mysterious English form.

Travelers, keep your eye out for such English oddities and have your camera at ready mode!
You will surely fine many strange (へんな) and interesting (おもしろい) English phrases and words on the people and on the streets of Japan. You can even find such amusing examples on the internet, too!

I ask my Japanese friends, proudly wearing English on their clothes, if they know what it means. They always say, “No!”. I ask them why they bought that particular item and they say the price was good or they liked the style and color. Often times they get embarrassed, especially the females, when they discover what the English words mean they so boldly display. I guess if other Japanese have no clue what the English says or means, no problem! That English design is cute (かわゆい) is the main point, after all.

The bonus is when a traveler in Japan can find some shop which sells such strange English clothes and find the right sizes to take some souvenir (おみやげ) examples back home.

Just remember when buying cotton clothes in Japan, they will greatly shrink in the clothes drier back home, something which isn`t found in many Japanese homes.
