What the heck is otsumami?
February 27th, 2009
Ahhhh, otsumami! Join us in this episode of Happy Hour Japan as we talk about (and eat) otsumami, Japan’s potato chips, peanuts, and… dried squid!? The perfect snacks to go along with your alcoholic beverage while in Japan.

Love the social phrases.
A couple of things you could cover. How easy is it to get a social life ie. clubs and other groups when you first get to Japan without introduction. Also, are there any poplular myths that you could explode about japanese custom. For example politeness and deference. Staying at work until you boss leaves. We Engish are pretty lazy when not working too hard.
@Peter
Great suggestions! I especially like your idea about exploding popular Japanese myths — and I can definitely relate in regards to being lazy!
We’ll start thinking of ways to incorporate your ideas in our upcoming episodes.
Cheers!
This is awesome! Great content! Looking forward to more.
Thanks Lori! There’s more on the way
I enjoyed this clip (otsumami). I had tried and enjoyed the dried squid and some sort of shredded dried fish snacks while visiting Japan. My problem, at the Asian food market in Sacramento there are so many little packs of Japanese “stuff” and i can not read the labels to be able to tell what is inside. Thanks for the insights, the clips are great.
@val
Hi Val, thanks for the comment! I’m glad you’re enjoying our videos. I agree it can be a little scary to try something new, especially when you don’t know what it is! I’ll try to think of some create ways of introducing some of my favorite Japanese snacks for you to try.
even though i’m japanese there is lots stuff to learn here
really fun
this reminds me of a friend of mine once got really pissed off at the baby dry fishes in the otumami .. that i gave. hahaha xx
@meg
Funny! I can totally relate. My parents were always eating those small dried fish when I was growing. It took me a while to build up enough courage to actually try them myself, but once I did I was pleasantly surprised! Anyway, I’m glad your enjoying our videos and are learning new stuff! Stay tuned for more and thanks for your comment, Meg!
omg I did it! I made another comment
I was ordered to for the love of God….God loves me now right?
@Jamaipanese Yes, he does lol
(not that I’m an official spokesperson or anything…)
Random question: I am starting my own blog to share my photography experiences. Do you find it hard or easy to post consistently?
@Allysa Brown
I think it’s great that you’re starting a blog to share your work and experiences with others. I’m pretty new to blogging myself, but I found the hardest part was getting the ball rolling. It definitely gets easier with time, especially as people start following you on a more consistent basis. I find it’s very exciting and rewarding.
Nice video! I just stumbled across it while trying to get a definition of otsumami. I’m a teacher and charity worker in London who (having spent the previous 25 years travelling to japan with food companies) is also helping some Japanese tea and nori companies explain their products to Europeans. The ‘otsumami’ flavoured nori snacks are great - though the uni flavoured ones have caused some strange reactions (uuurrrggghhh!). Thanks for enlightening me!
That should say 15 not 25 years! Now I really feel old.
cool
yeah so my friend brought me back some of this from Japan and i had no idea it was squid till i watched this video.
i thought it was some kind of dried root vegetable!
no im gonna eat it with beer
